BWH opened the doors of its new Urgent Care Center at Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center at Patriot Place this week.
For patients seeking unscheduled treatment for minor illnesses and injuries, the center provides an efficient alternative to hospital emergency departments, which often have long waits for such conditions.
“This center fills a niche between scheduled appointments with your primary care physician and true emergency care,” said Christopher Baugh, MD, medical director of the Urgent Care Center. “You wouldn’t call 911 for the type of conditions and illnesses we treat at our urgent care center, but they do have a profound impact on the way you feel.”
The center is available to patients who seek treatment including evaluation and management of common illnesses, such as headache, flu, ear infections and urinary tract infections, as well as laceration repair and IV therapy for nausea or dehydration.
The center will be staffed by BWH physicians, as well as nurses, medical assistants and support staff.
“Patients who come here will receive prompt and compassionate care from our highly skilled team in a beautiful setting,” said Ron Walls, MD, chair of Emergency Medicine. “We’re able to deliver urgent care closer to home in a cost-effective way, with the appropriate level of intervention.”
Designed to accommodate multiple patients and minimize wait times, the Urgent Care Center features eight bays, including two private treatment rooms, and a waiting area.
Patients in the area have been requesting walk-in and urgent care services since the center opened in 2009. “In addition, many patrons at Patriot Place have entered the building to request urgent care,” said Richard Zane, MD, vice chair of Emergency Medicine. “With the opening of this urgent care center, we are able to address this unmet need.”
The Urgent Care Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The building is closed on Sunday and will close early on days when large concerts and events are scheduled at Gillette Stadium.
